Build of the Week #4 – BN Sports BLS RX7

To say Australia’s Bn Sports BLS Rx7 is an eye-catcher, would be a major understatement.

This 1992 Mazda FD3S Rx7 features not only show-stopping detailing in the aesthetic department, but the rotary engine also sounds incredible, puts out 600 horsepower and drifts like a beast.

Owner, Cliff Clayson of Adelaide, Australia has undertaken a 10yr, meticulous build to get it to its current state.

“I first purchased the Rx7 back in 2009 as a street car, it was a complete car minus the engine and gearbox. From there it started the transformation” says Cliff.

This transformation is headlined with a REVS Performance Rotary spec 13b engine further modified by Xtreme Rotaries (specifics are detailed at the end of this article). A Borgwarner 9280 EFR Turbo and Garage7 spec custom tuned, match ported exhaust manifold also help produce the 600 hp at 20psi boost.

 

Cliff comments “there is nothing that hasn’t been modified on this car, from the ground up the Garage 7 team and myself have slowly modified and refined every detail either through striving for the best or finding weaknesses and then making them stronger through upgrades, developing new parts be it custom or sourced from all the corners of the globe. I can truly say this car is now Bullet proof every part serves a purpose and does it to perfection.”

To control the engine and all its modifications, the top of the line Link Thunder ECU was installed and tuned by Garage 7 Tuner Declan Walsh. Together with a Garage 7 Bosch Motorsport E-Throttle, them team have utilised features such as launch control, traction control and downshift throttle blips.

All the engine information is relayed to the cockpit via a Link MXS Strada Dash.

 

 

A Direct Clutches Billet twin plate clutch and TTi Industries 6 speed sequential dog box have been installed in the drive-train upgrades.

Racing Beat front & rear sway bars,  DG5/Wisteria Kick Blue Coilovers and a Wisefab extra lock kit then make up just some of the upgraded steering and suspension outfit.

A Bn Sports Body kit finishes the car off impeccably. Cliff recently secured sponsorship from Bn Sports in Japan (with the help of Dorijunkie Imports) to install the all new BLS 9 piece body kit. This is the only one of it kind in Australia and one of just 3 in the world outside of Japan.

 

 

The quality product used is top-notch and Cliff is proud of that: “it is a true honour to represent for such amazing companies” he says.

The car was built predominantly for Drifting. It has become well suited for more purposes however, partaking events such as drag racing, roll racing, hill climbs and also car shows. At the Hot Import Nights & Fitted Festival last year, it won Best Rotary in Show.

 

 

Not one detail has been missed in the build. You can see from the specifications list below that there has been a HUGE amount of work put into winning such awards.

On the cards for 2020 (when public events resume again) is several drift events at world class Motorsport facility – The Bend Motorsport Park. The car will also be part of filming for an online show at Adelaide’s other local track, JDMX Park at Mambray Creek. The crew also have plans to travel interstate for a Queensland Matsuri, a Keep it Reet event or two in Victoria, aswell as a DCA event at the new Pheasant Wood circuit. It promises to be busy year ahead!
